About this course

Tableau is a powerful and fastest-growing data visualization tool used in the Business Intelligence Industry. It helps in simplifying raw data into a very easily understandable format. Data analysis is very fast with Tableau and the visualizations created are in the form of dashboards and worksheets. The data that is created using Tableau can be understood by professional at any level in an organization. It even allows a non-technical user to create a customized dashboard.

This is a case study-based course. A generic retail dataset will be used for the practical hands-on to reinforce your understanding of the concepts and tool. The course will train participants how to create dynamic dashboards and stories in Tableau using external data, how to create relationships between multiple tables, how to use advanced Tableau built-in filters, functions and reporting features to enhance user interactivity with the dashboard, how to build and manage an efficient data model that feeds the dashboard with updatable business data, and also how to use the publish the dashboards and share it via a URL.

At the end of the course, a case study related to the topics learned will be given. Participants will have a chance to discuss the case study scenario and come out with the solution. This case study helps participants to have a better understanding of the topics learned and know how to apply the skills in their work. Model answers of the case study and samples of Tableau Dashboards will be given to participants for reference and revision after the course.

This is a Basic-Intermediate level course specially for Managers and Executives who are required to prepare various types of impressive executive management reports and business key performance reports.

Course Pre-Requisite
This course is suitable for beginners and does not require any prior knowledge of the tool. A comprehensive course structure will ensure that the candidates take away a clear understanding of the concepts of data storytelling and gain strong hands-on experience on the tool.

This course will be running and taught based on the PC Windows software and not Mac versions. (All Laptops and materials will be provided)

Day 1
Understanding what Data Storytelling means

The aim of dashboard is to deliver the right findings and insights using the right KPIs and intuitive visualizations. The dashboard should convey a specific and clear message which should not need any external explanation.Participants will learn about:

  • Fundamentals of KPIs and their respective visual format
  • The visual variables used in visualizations
  • What differentiates a good visualization from a bad one
  • Basic technical terminologies to get started with Tableau
  • Different kinds of charts in Tableau
Getting started with Tableau

Tableau’s interface is rich in features and can connect to many different data sources. This part of the session covers the tableau interface, the data storage formats and different features available. Participants will learn how to:

  • Connect and join different data sources
  • Create union/blend of two tables
  • Create relationships between multiple tables
  • Create data extracts and filter out data at source
  • Create basic charts (pie charts, bar charts, line charts)
  • Format text and colors in a chart
Organize and sort data, apply filters and use quick calculations

Organizing data using hierarchies, groups and sets help to summarize data in a more precise way. To further refine the data, you can apply different sorts of filters to find meaningful insights. Participants will learn how to:

  • Conversion of data types
  • Create hierarchies in data
  • Create groups and sets
  • Apply in-built filters to a chart as slicers/ radio buttons/drop down menu
  • Create bins and plot histograms/frequency plots
  • Use quick table calculations to see percentage of total/running total/
    difference from previous
  • Use hierarchy to create dynamic aggregations
User defined calculations and functions, parameter control

Custom calculated fields and functions help you derive new variables and KPIs. Participants will learn how to:

  • Apply the If-Then logic
  • Use pre-defined functions for strings, numbers and dates
  • Calculate percentages
  • Apply logical functions
  • Split and merge fields
  • Create dynamic filters and variable bin size
  • Use the created fields in visualizations and as filters
Day 2
Advanced analytics

Trend lines, distribution, forecasting, regression and clustering are the advanced analytics features available in Tableau. This part of the session will cover the overview of advanced analytics without going into the mathematical detail. Participants will learn how to:

  • See correlation and fit regression line
  • Forecast the future value using in-built mechanisms
  • Create clusters and visualize them
  • Create trend line/average line to make charts more interpretable
Maps and Creating Analytical Dashboards

Analytical dashboards are designed to help decision makers, executives and senior leaders, establish targets based on insights into historical data, set goals and understand what and why something happened so that appropriate changes can be implemented. Example – Sales dashboard by State/Province. Participants will learn how to:

  • Fit multiple visualizations into a dashboard and format them for interpretable
  • Use single filter for multiple visualizations, highlight an anomaly and redirect to external websites on click
  • Add images and annotations to the dashboards
  • Place marks on a map
  • Customize maps
External map service, Storypoints and publishing to server

External map services are used to add map layers that contain more details than provided by the default maps. Storypoints in Tableau are a way of presenting insights in the form of a sequence of slides. Storypoints are needed to explain the origin and arrive at a conclusion. Once all the dashboards/storypoints are prepared, you will learn how to publish them to a server and share them. Participants will learn how to:

  • Add Mapbox map service to create more detailed maps
  • Explain the origin of a problem to solution using storypoint navigation
  • Publish dashboard to Tableau Public / Custom server and Web Authoring
Case Study

Participants will have a chance to design a user-friendly dynamic dashboard and publish it to your Tableau Public profile. The case study helps participants to apply the skills and functions they learned from the training so that they know exactly how to build interactive and informative dashboards in their work.

About Mallikarjun

Mallikarjun is an experienced Data Scientist and has worked across multiple functions in multi-billion dollar companies. He specializes in Business Intelligence and Machine Learning and has worked on assignments in Australia, Malaysia, Japan, and India. His skill expertise and love for public speaking have encouraged him to take up corporate training classes. He has been a corporate trainer since 2017 and has given many sessions on topics related to data analytics, business intelligence, and data visualization. Till date, he has coached over 250 people to help them start a new journey in data analytics. The first business intelligent tool he picked up was Tableau about 4 years ago and is still his favorite and his most popular course.
